Abstract
This article reviews the current state of the knowledge in the management of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). Athorough review of the literature concerning physiological issues including the clinical manifestations of SCD as well as current treatment modalities is included. Therapeutic management of health and illness for a child with SCD is discussed in relation to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Recommendations for nursing practice and research are made.
